During the period 2007-2013 HiST (Sør-Trøndelag University College, Trondheim, Norway) has led several EU commission co-funded projects, like Do-IT and Done-IT. The main aim of these projects has been to develop new models and tools to enhance interactivity in class and engage students in discussions concerning curriculum.
HiST’s workshop will demonstrate SRS and PeLe tools with the preferred methodology. It will show how easy it is for a teacher to create questions and tests, get and provide the feedback. The workshop will focus on the teacher’s role in the process, and how it is possible to flip the assessment from an area of pure reproduction into an arena for actual learning.
Presenters: MSc. Tord Talmo, MSc. Audun Grøm, MSc. Knut Bjørkli
SRS is a response system allowing the students to respond to questions provided by the teacher in a fast and anonymous way, making every student’s voice heard in the lecture and giving the lecturer an opportunity to see how well the students have understood the lecture. Research done at HiST indicates that approximately 90% of the students participate in the vote, using their own handheld devices, like SmartPhones, tablets or laptops. This makes SRS a cost-efficient, dynamic and effective tool to use in class, both for the student and the lecturer.
Pele, a Computer Aided Assessment System, was designed to give the teacher the tools to prepare immediate feedback after the assessment. Students submit their results through their private SmartPhones, tablets or laptops. This makes the system and method cost-efficient and fast. The system allows the students to use the same device in a post assessment activity where the teacher can lead the students through the assessment results, give feedback on the results and immediately engage the students in problems that have not been understood. Here the Student Response System (SRS) that is integrated in PeLe, can be used to trigger group discussions and arrange creative and collaborative peer learning in the class.
