Introduction

Mobile learning (m-learning) is implementation of hand held devices to access and interact with learning materials and to communicate with the institution, tutors and fellow students. In this respect m-learning covers two main functions of the Internet: access to information and provision of a new communication infrastructure. At HiST 90 % of the students have access to their own modern mobile device (survey done on 307 students september 2012). At Lomonosov Moscow State University (LMSU) a similar survey done on 230 students in September 2011 showed that 85 % had their own Smartphones.

Mobile devices are becoming pervasive and ubiquitous in the societies, structuring private, business and educational communication framework. Mobile devices indeed replace the function of other devices. These trends put tremendous pressure on high schools, colleges, and universities that are not yet ready to use them as a powerful communication tool within education. HiST has during the last 4 years lead 6 international European pilot projects that address how to incorporate effectively use of mobile devices into teaching and learning processes, as well as one large national project. Similarly, LMSU has during the last 2 years led several mobile learning and mobile technologies related projects in Russia (Mobile devices in language classroom).
